Origin Story

Maya Mountain Cacao (“MMC”) is a pioneer in direct trade cacao sourcing. MMC put Belize on the craft chocolate map through production of high-quality, socially and environmentally impactful cacao. MMC works with 350+ certified organic smallholder cacao farming families in the Toldeo District, most of them indigenous Q’eqchi’ and Mopan Maya. MMC centrally processes all cacao at a post-harvest facility constructed in 2016 with support from Dandelion Chocolate. The farmgate price paid for wet cacao in Belize has grown by over 90% since MMC began operations in 2010, leading to meaningful increases in farmer income. In 2016, an increase in buying competition in the area drove cacao prices up to farmers, and therefore to MMC’s FOB price. MMC operates a 24-hectare Demonstration Farm, for farmer trainings in best practices for increasing cacao yield and quality; in 2016, the first pods were harvested from the demo farm, just 18 months after planting.
